Help! I suck at cooking. [14 Nov 2009|01:58am]

I have a kind of weird question for any cooks among you.
So my current diet includes, for the most part, lettuce and grilled chicken. I bought a bag of those "perfect portion" chicken breasts Perdue sells cos they're all roughly the same size. Nice for dieting. The first two I cooked immediately after I bought them, the night of and the next night, so they were thawed. They came out DELICIOUS. I threw the rest in the freezer and take one out the night before I plan to cook it to defrost in the fridge. When I cooked the last two they came out... weird. They were cooked all the way through but had the texture in your mouth of being raw. Tough, almost crunchy, cartilage-y. Really mostly inedible. I've never experienced this before so I can't tell if the chicken is just iffy, or if it has something to do with my cooking methods or with the meat beng defrosted. It's not really economical or practical for me to have to buy fresh, unfrozen chicken breasts 1 or 2 at a time. The whole point is to buy in bulk, freeze, and defrost as needed.
I've cooked all all of them in my toaster oven (since it's such a tiny portion) at 350 degrees for 17-20 minutes. Like I said, the first two attempts were delicious, tender, and awesome. My second two attempts have been disgusting.
HALP! What could I be doing wrong?

On a side note, a lean cuisine pizza with sauteed broccoli, peppers, and onions piled on top of it is SO incredibly delicious. I love Friday night dinner *_*
Also I am going to have a Chipotle salad for lunch with Jisuk tomorrow and I have never been so excited for fast food in my life.

Man, I think my wireless router must be dead or something. After talking with Comcast and a few hours of trying to reset up my wireless network, I can't figure anything out. Both of my computers detect my wireness network just fine and can connect. But I can't actually get anything to load on the internet. Foo. At least, until I get a new one, I can sap off of someone else's wireless.

Easy, Hiro's power from Heroes. Flying or invisibility would be fun, but the ability to control time and space would be the most useful to me.

I wouldn't use the time travel aspect of it, as I've seen enough science fiction to know that's a bad bad idea. But the simple ability to pause time for a bit would be niiiice. I always feel like there's not enough time in the day to do everything I need/want to do (work, fun, sleep). Not to mention...the ability to teleport to work would solve the problem of my horrid commute.

Dear Internet,

It is a rare moment when one reaches the end of the internet. After traversing a lengthy path littered with memes, blogs, adverts, and an endless sea of forums, I finally reached the end of the internet. As I stared off the face of the internet, I felt its cthonic undulations slowly peel away my sanity.

It was then that I truly understood the impact of connecting thousands of separate cultures through virtual space. Russian Lolcat macros.

Photobucket

This image translates approximately as:

"-His lethargic display of apathy and lack of industry is shameful!

-It is a legitimate response to the harsh and inconsequential nature of being. I celebrate his tenacity!"

As you can see, the Russian take on photo macros comes in a different flavor than our American counterpart. My personal belief is that the internet finally ran out of American lolcats and decided to expand its terrible reach. Take this fine example of American Lolcat literature:

Photobucket

Professor Zubrick, head of Caturday studies at Rofl University, believes that the vernacular differences stem from the influence of different sorts of WWII propaganda used in the separate countries. I sought him out for a personal interview. After praising a series of glorious cat humor, fresh from the gulag press, he spouted, "In mother Russia, cat picture tag YOU!" and then disappeared into his mad scientist lab to resume staring at a strange series of tubes intended to quantify and measure the internet.

More Russian Cat Macros can be found at http://www.rolcats.com/.
Profession Zubrick of Rofl University can be contacted at [info]bmwman91

More on this as it develops. Kigs out.

Truly,
Kigs

[ music | Triarii - Anthem From The Iron Flame ]

I could say a lot about this, but in the end you can all probably guess what my words would be. So I'll just say this boy motivates me.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8357011.stm

There were five people who came after me from a place in Bajaur. They tricked me. They told me they were going to behead my father.

I went with them but my father wasn't there. They tied me up.

They said: 'You have two choices. We will behead you, or you will become a suicide bomber.' I refused.

There were two more guys of my age. They were also training to be suicide bombers. If we refused they would tie our hands behind our backs, blindfold us and start beating us.

They brainwashed us and told us we would go to heaven. They said 'there will be honey and juice and God will appear in front of you. You will have a beautiful house in Heaven'.

We used to ask them to let us out to pray. They would reply 'you are already on your way to heaven. You don't need to pray.'

They beat me hard for five days. I wasn't given any food. While they were beating me I agreed to become a suicide bomber. They separated me from the other boys.

They took me to a dark room and started giving me pills. I was handed over to Maulvi Fakir [the Bajaur Taliban commander]. After all this preparation they said I was to go and do the job in a mosque.

It was an ordinary mosque but the cleric there used to talk against the Taliban, and they declared him their enemy. They told me the cleric was a non-believer, a non-Muslim.

They took off my shirt and put the jacket on my shoulders. There were two hooks on my chest. They told me that when you go there you say 'Allahu Akbar' [God is Great] and then you pull apart these two hooks. Then they took me there, showed me the mosque and went off.

I was drugged and I couldn't feel anything. I only came to my senses when I arrived in the mosque. I saw the peaceful kind face of the cleric, and I saw the mosque was full of holy books. I saw the people praying. And I thought, they are all Muslims. How can I do this? I decided not to and I came out.

I sat under a tree outside the mosque and waited for prayers to be over. After that I made my way back to the Taliban. Then they called me 'a son of a bitch' and asked why I had come back without doing it.

I told them I could not do it because they were carrying out body searches of all the people entering the mosque. They took off my vest and handed me over to Maulvi Fakir.

They tied me up but I told them to give me another chance and I would do it. They trusted me. I was roaming around with them for a couple of days. I got to the road, found transport and came home. They followed me to my house. They wanted to know if I was still there or had run somewhere else.

The Taliban had beaten me so harshly my back was scarred. When my parents saw that my mother started to cry, and told me not to go back to them. My father asked them why they were after his son. One day he took his weapon and went after them. But they wanted to kill him so he came back home and closed the door.

Before the Taliban came we used to enjoy freedom. We used to play, and go to our schools. There were no restrictions on us. Morning and evening we used to play games, and sit and chat with friends. We used to listen to music on our mobile phones. They banned that. They stopped us doing anything. They stopped us playing cricket and going to school. We felt like prisoners.

I want to join the army because they are the defenders of the land. They are fighting for the right cause. I want to fight against the Taliban. I have no other intention except to defend my country. The Taliban should be eliminated.

I want to tell the Taliban that they are cruel, and what they did to me was unjust. I can't kill innocent Muslims.

I am not afraid of them. I am only afraid of God. I am answerable only to Him.

Hello, Montreal! I am here this weekend thanks to roadtrip buddies Laura Kenins, Mike Holmes, and Dorian Lang. We are here to exhibit at EXPOZINE! It should be a really good time, but for today I am content to explore the streets of this beautiful city with our lovely hosts Jordyn F. Bochon and Tim Carpenter who are both awesome and have kindly allowed us into their home for the weekend! Last night Jordyn made a PIE! And I helped, sort of. PIE!

On the way here I drew some little car drawings:

Originally for the Illustration Friday theme "blur", thinking of how the past few months have passed in such a manner:

And a little tree sketch:

See you at Expozine!

If you could only listen to one CD for the rest of your life, what would you choose and why?

Wow, this is a tough one. I like such a wide variety of music and I like to mix it up a bit. When I get burnt out on alternative, I put on some film scores. When I tire of that, I listen to some video game music. I could probably comfortably make a mix CD of music I could tolerate listening to forever...but one pre-existing album?

I think it would have to be something instrumental like a film/movie/game score, because my moods on music with lyrics (like alt rock) change too frequently. But beyond that I'm not really sure. This is a really tough question, as I know I'd get bored with any album if I listened to it constantly without any variation. I really choose my listening music based on my mood so I can't always listen to the same thing.

This is failing to answer the question, but I honestly don't think I could pick one album. Maybe one artist. I dunno. Probably something like Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Bear McCreary, or Yasunori Mitsuda.

I really enjoy having a wide variety of music at my disposal. If anything, I often feel I don't have enough new music and am always looking for more. I've never thought, "I could listen to this particular thing for the rest of my life and be content."

My nephew used my tablet and PHOTOSHOP to draw an awesome picture!
We learned about the paint bucket tool, the paintbrush, the eraser, how to copy stuff, and even layers!
I had to help pick colors but they turned out great

Tony wanted me to post this so he could get some feedback!

Heres what he has to say about the picture:
"It's about a man screaming at the sky and the sky is raining rubber chickens, but only at him. And... he's in the city surrounded by his neighbors who are not home. Hope you like it!" -Tony Sergio, age 8

Bowler Caps and Fashionites [12 Nov 2009|11:40am]

[ music | Ladyhawke - Paris is Burning ]

Dear Internet,

My closet is filled with costume pieces. Bowler caps. Cloaks. Masks. Fingerless gloves. A slew of cravats, double breasted vests, and a thousand odds and ends from bygone generations threaten to overtake my closet.

Which is why I was surprised when the New York Times released This Article. The Article, entitled "This Just in From the 1890s", describes the recent rise of Victorian fashion in the clothing world. From Cardinal Red Tailcoats from Ralph Lauren, to Suspenders, Bowler Caps, and Capes, the era of Charles Dicken's, The Titanic, and Pride and Prejudice is steadily making its entrance.

Good news for all the Theatre Dorks, you can now wear your throw back outfits at Starbucks. Bad news for Fashionites, I give it six months before we see Cravats at Hot Topic.

A bit of eye candy. )

Kigs

Cel-Shading techniques? [12 Nov 2009|12:41am]

thornwolf
I'll be totally open and say I suck at cel-shading. It's never something I've quite gotten the hang of the way I like it. I really like the styles of David Kawena and of course Keovi, but for some reason, try as I might, I can't seem to get the hang of it.

Do any of you have any favorite cel shading tutorials, techniques, advice and critiques for me? Please see my recent half-assed attempt to tell me what I can do better. Admittedly, towards the end it was so late at night I got sloppy, but I might want to revisit this and try again:
http://thornwolf.artspots.com/image/38302/greylock-character-sheet

Here's what I did with this one, just to give a little insight:
I haven't found a good way to ink digitally as I primarily use Photoshop and I haven't been able to get the crisp lines in photoshop that I like to see on digitally inked things (if anyone has any tips for this I'd love to hear them), so I drew it in pencil and just tried to "ink" with the pencil as best I could, then put the "lines" layer on multiply and colored the flats under it.

For the shading I used a saturated magenta which I had on a new layer set to a low opacity. I /attempted/ a little bit of gradient work on the overall flat color but that didn't work out as I had planned.

Really any advice or tips would be great! I want to give this another shot.
